Di'int Do Nuffins Files: Miami Gardens police shoot black
2/16/2015 5:45:42 PM
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida mother's 911 call led to tragedy after, police said, responding officers were forced to fire on her son after he engaged in a physical altercation with them, fatally striking him early Sunday. Miami Gardens resident Catherine Daniels said her son, 25-year-old Lavall Hall, had woken up in a rage and had run out of their home near Northwest 192nd Street and Third Avenue, which is when she contacted authorities. " , 'My son has got a mental problem. Please send somebody here to help him,'" she said. According to Miami Gardens Police, officers responded to the call, received at around 5 a.m., detailing the erratic behavior of a violent, mentally unstable man. Upon arriving at Daniels' residence, the responding officers encountered Hall. Investigators said the subject did not cooperate, and instead fought the law enforcers using an unidentified object. The officers then pulled out their weapons and shot Hall. A woman who lives nearby told 7News she heard the commotion outside of her home. "'Get on the ground, get on the ground,' and then shortly after I hear 'boom,' I mean, 'pow, pow, pow,'" said Regina. A visibly shaken Daniels said she never imagined the officers would open fire on her son. "When I heard the gunshot, I told the police, 'Please don't kill my child. He didn't have no weapon,'" she said. According to Regina, the object Hall was carrying was a broom. "You tell them that the child is mentally challenged, and then all of a sudden you run out to him," she said. "You know he doesn't have a gun. He had a broom, a red broom with straws. Old, red broom." Hall was pronounced dead on the scene. "Now I have to try to bury my child for something that he did. No! It's not right!" said Daniels. Hall's family called into question the officers' actions. "She didn't call the police to say, 'Kill my son.' She called the police to say, 'My son has a mental issue. Come help him,'" said an upset relative. Investigators said, as a result of the altercation, one of the officers was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown. Sunday evening, Hall's loved ones continued to grapple with their devastating loss and asked themselves why police couldn't have handled the situation differently. "He had a mental problem, and I told them that," said Daniels as she wept inconsolably in the arms of a relative. "They took my child away from me!" Daniels said, in retrospect, she would not have reached out to police. "Why did they take my child away from me? I don't know. If I'd known they would have killed my child, I would never have called them and asked them to come and help me," she said. "They could have dealt with that on another level," said Walter Pinkies, Hall's cousin. "You didn't have to shoot nobody to calm nobody down." Monday afternoon, a distraught Daniels told 7News she is still looking for answers. "All I want to know, why did y'all kill my child, and I begged them y'all, 'Please don't kill my child?'" "That was my second birth. I had 25 years of my son's life. Now I don't have nothing, and I know it's because I just asked them for help," she continued. Miami Gardens Police said they are conducting an investigation on the shooting. The department issued a statement which reads in part, "The loss of any life is tragic and understandably difficult. We are investigating the incident and will provide an additional statement as more facts become available. This investigation will be transparent and thorough. Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved." Hall leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter. Hall's family said they plan to hold a vigil for him Monday night. They said they will gather outside of his home and walk to the spot where he was shot.
